In Search Engine Optimization

When it comes to search engine optimization, eCommerce websites usually need more efforts than non-eCommerce websites.   Most of the eCommerce sites have a long list of categories and hundreds of product pages.  It can be a huge project to have each product page optimized, fill with rich content and rank high on Google, Yahoo and Bing.  Since search engine optimization is still one of the long term strategies to drive traffic to your eCommerce site, it is worthwhile to spend the time and resources to do it.

Many people tend to think SEO for eCommerce websites is different from SEO for non-eCommerce sites.  As a matter of fact, the principles are the same.  You need to have keywords in the page url string, the title tag, the description meta tag.  All product images should have proper keywords in their alt meta tags.  Pablo Palatnik has a couple of more that need to be emphasized.

Use Robust Product Descriptions
As much as we hear that content is king for SEO, many ecommerce websites do not use adequate descriptions of their product, such as what it is, how it works and key points consumers need to know. If you create good content for the consumer, it will also benefit search engine optimization.

Make Your Product Page Link Worthy
Content and link building are important for SEO. It’s important, therefore, that your product pages have links pointing to them. We call these “deep links.”

Display Social Media Buttons
Social media activity affects search engine algorithms. We’ve addressed this recently, at “Managing SEO and Social Media Together.”  Make sure you have share buttons on every product page to allow users to share and distribute the product. Pinterest, for example, allows users to post a picture while linking back to the source of that image. Make sure every product page has social media sharing buttons.

Utilize User Generated Reviews
Another way of helping your product page rank in search engines is to use content that is created by the users, such as product reviews. The best example of effective reviews is at Amazon.com, which uses them not only to help consumers, but also for SEO purposes.

I like the idea of using customer reviews as a way to build a content rich product page.  It not only helps you build fresh use-generated content to make Google Panda happy but also helps other online shoppers to make a buying decision.  Do you have other ways or tools to search engine optimize your eCommerce site?  I would love to hear from you.

I do consider all the ideas you’ve introduced in your post. They’re really convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are too brief for beginners. May just you please extend them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.
